NUTRITION & HEALTH BENEFITS

A new nutritional study

Up until recently, there was no species-specific nutrient information available for West Coast Groundfish species. So in 2022, we set out to fill this knowledge gap and commissioned Exact Scientific Services Lab, a certified food analysis lab in Bellingham, WA, to carry out an independent study of 10 of the most common groundfish species. The analysis revealed that West Coast groundfish species are some of the most nutritious foods in existence, not just compared to other seafood, but all animal proteins. According to the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans we are advised to eat seafood at least twice per week to get enough of the important nutrients contained in seafood, especially essential Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA + EPA). While seafood is generally healthy, some species analyzed in this new study pack a much greater nutritional punch than other popular species and are especially good for us.

Why we show nutrient content by calories not grams

Looking at nutrient content on a calorie basis rather than on a weight basis is a fairer and more meaningful method of comparing foods. It eliminates the distorting effect of water content in foods, and thus gives a more accurate picture of nutrient density.

This method is also more aligned with our bodies’ actual dietary equation. It does not matter to the body how many grams or ounces of food is consumed in a day, but only how much energy (i.e., calories) is consumed, and that it came from a good balance of protein, fat, or carbohydrates. And that balance is easier to intuitively understand when it’s expressed as a percentage of protein/fat/carb calories of total calories.

Moreover, within its daily calorie budget, the body needs to get sufficient amounts of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). And so, to eat a healthy nutritious diet, we must choose foods that give us ample amounts of micronutrients for the calories we eat.
